Sunrise in Venice is pure magic!

Trust me, it is worth the 5 am wake up call (in the summer). The temperature is delightful, there are no crowds, and the light is pure gold! Specifically the light in Venice’s most famous square — Saint Mark’s. The sun rises just over the domes of the golden mosaic clad church. It then dances across one of Europe’s most beautiful squares. You can also head over to the Doge’s palace for a gorgeous view of the beginning of the Grand Canal.

The only downside to waking up for the sunrise in Venice is that if it’s the weekend, you will have to wait a couple hours for the coffee bars to open. Sophia and I learned this one the hard way.

As I have mentioned before, it wasn’t until I started visiting Venice with my quasi-local friend Sophia that I really grew to love the city. Florence is my home away for home and Venice is hers. Sophia introduced me to the softer side of Venice. A little bit of local knowledge goes along way in a city overrun with tourists. Sophia actually just started a blog herself, which you can check out here.

You can also check out my Venice guide here.

A dramatic city like Venice demands a dramatic look. I actually purchased this red maxi dress in Padova . It was perfect for Venice — dramatic but comfy and light weight (very important in hot and humid Venice). Sadly you cannot shop this exact dress, but I have rounded up some other Venice-worthy red maxi dresses below!
